Hi all.

My first post about my potential first boat purchase.

I am looking at a used Bayliner for my first boat. Its a 1984 Capri I think a 1950 with a 5.7 chev I/O and Volvo 275 leg. I will try to post some photos, but that may not work out...lol

The boat has new interior upholstery, and the engine has only 50 hours on it after a rebuild. The leg has not been touched, but is not corroded. Its a fresh water boat, and seems to be in good shape. The carpet is stained, and needs replacing, but guess what....I am a carpet installer.

I can do a lot of maintence and mechanical work to it if needed, but I want to make sure that its a good candidate for me.

The seller is asking 4700 cad$ obo.....

What do you fine folks think?

Please do a search on "buying a boat". There are a ton of posts on the forum that will help to guide you. If you are accurate about the age then you need to do some serious checking of the floors and transom. Most of the Bayliner rotten floors posts come from that year. Also, price seems waaaay too high. I think there are better deals out there...IMHO. Also if you have not been shopping craigslist, kijiji, ebay, etc for the past two or three months, then you really don't know what is a good deal and whats not. Good luck and welcome to the iBoats forum.

NO-NO-NO.....And the reasons.....1984-2008=24 YEAR
84' Liner, way too much money by at least 2K, Also floor/stringer rot, very common in those year boats. merc/volvo...stick with merc, alot easier to find parts, if you have 4700 clams to spend on a used boat look at : searay-colbalt-crownline-4winns-grady-white-all are good reliable boats easy to fix and will run forever if well maintained. Welcome..

Heed the advice above on checking it out.

Not sure where in Canada you are, but in Ottawa area, I'd expect to see that boat go for $3000-$3500 so it's overpriced by what I've seen up for sale.

Thanks a bunch for your fast replies.

I am in the Vancouver area, and yes I also felt that it was priced too high.
The seller mentioned spending 2500 on performance parts for the rebuild, and the 500 he spent on the vinyl. I think that he is trying to get out of it and recover some dough.

I was gonna lowball him at 3000 or so, but in light of the other issues that you guys mentioned I may wait for a few months.....The season never totally ends here, but it does do a huge nosedive...lol

Lots more boats will be listed. Craigslist gets about a hundred new boats listed per day of late.

Thanks again for your advice.

Cheers..

Corey.
