I have a 1998 115hp Johnson and was wanting in know a simply way to see if the motor is charging the battery.
Where can I hookup a meter to read a charge rate.

Install a voltmeter in the instrument panel, drawing power from the ignition switch. If the voltage while running is 13.5 or above, the stator is charging the battery (as long as all connections are clean and tight). While an ammeter would give a better indication of rate of charge, the wiring for them is more problematic and I'm not sure how available they are new from marine instrument makers.

Is there a voltmeter installed in this boat. Most boats of that era had a tach, speedometer, fuel and voltmeter as a fairly standard equipment. For a quick check, use a hand held multitester directly to the battery. Measure and note the voltage with engine OFF. Repeat the test with the engine running at about 2000 rpm. Engine off should produce battery voltage of 12.6 give or take a tenth or two. Engine running should produce a reading in excess of 13.5 volts.
