I've got a 63 evinrude speedifour. I'm trying to tell if its a electric shift or manual. How do I tell? I start it and push the throttle forward it goes forward. I pull back and reverse. There is a lever on both sides of the motor

The speedifour was mechanical shift.----If it has a lever on the starboard side it is machanical shift.

I had a '63 Speedi-four that I just got rid of. That was a good healthy motor for me. I also had an electric shift motor before that one and it had push buttons for swithching gears. There was a button for neutral, another one for forward and a third button for reverse. The electric shift motor needs a specific oil made for electric shift motors, (Type "C" lower unit oil). Cost more than just regular 90 weight hy-poid lower unit oil which is all you need on your mechanical shift motor.
