Re: is my oil pump working?

Is this engine new to you or have you owned it for awhile. If it's new to you, premix the first tank of fuel. Then place a mark or tape on the oil resevoir to mark the oil level. Run about six to 12 gallons of fuel while watching the oil tank. If the oil level is going down the pump is working. when you've run about 6 or 12 gallons of fuel, add oil. If you ran 6 gallons, one pint of oil should bring the level back to the mark. 12 gallons would take two pints. No need to pre-mix after that.

Re: is my oil pump working?

If when you hear the power on self test beeps when you first turn on the ignition key, and then don't hear any beeping while running, then your oil pump is working.

If you don't hear any test beeps when you turn on the key, there's no way of telling if it's working.

If you get beeping when running, you may or may not be getting oil. It could also be an electronic failure.

The small oil tank on the engine is supposed to be plumb full at all times. The boat tank goes down in use.

If you aren't sure, mix oil in your fuel till you know. Too much oil won't cause much trouble, but no oil will wreck things in a hurry.

hope it helps

John is right.. That is why myself and all of my friends take the oil pump off, put the dummy plug in its place that Merc makes and plug off the brass plug on the Starboard side with a pipe plug...Plum the fuel line right to the fuel pump and lose everything else...You can disconnect the oil alarm and start mixing...You will never lose an engine to lack of oiling...If your horn isn't working, and there is air in your system for any reason you will not pump oil and blow up the motor. None of us are willing to take this chance... On Johnsons it is easy, just don't plum the tank and block off the fitting going to the engine..You then use the VRO pump as just a fuel pump...These things werer supposed to make life easier in regards to mixing but when they break, and then do the motor is toast.....

Re: is my oil pump working?

I do get quick beeps when I turn the key so I guess it is working. I am just kind of scared I am the one who had replace all my pistons. I just dont want to go through that process again. I ended up replacing all pistons, headgaskets, powerhead cover, rebuilt the fuel pump, replaces thermos and impeller, misc items ect. By doing this it set me back about 1200$ which is good by doing it myself. my merc. guy wanted 2000$ just to do the pistons. So I should do 50.1 mix in the tank even if the pump is working and it won't hurt. Also I did get a little smoke when motor is running I can't tell if it is blue or white. Maybe its just oil, grease used in replacing pistons thats buring off?? Thanks for the info by the way.

Read my post again --- carefully!!!!! TEST YOUR OIL INJECTION by mixing oil with fuel AND the injection system. Yes it is doubling the oil but this is a TEST. If the oil from the tank is going down at a 50:1 rate the system is working. If not it isn't. If it ISN'T working, you then eliminate the oil injection or repair it, or you disable it and continue to pre-mix. When the engine toasted those pistons it may or may not have been due to lack of oil. Gummed up and varnished carbs makes an engine run very lean which destroys pistons. Unless you rebuilt the carbs you risk an engine burn down again. Just fixing what happened with an engine is not a guarantee it won't happen again. You need to determine what caused the problem in the first place.

Re: is my oil pump working?

hey silver tip I did have a major crack in my oil line right at the crwl cover. Did not notice it intill oil was leaking out. by then my piston were already fried. I will try the premix you suggested. I just want to be sure it was ok to run it with premix and (if the oil pump is working..) if that would be to much oil. Also will the motor lack performance or cause hard starts with that much oil running (if the pump is working) at the same time. thanks
