ok i just traded a shotgun and 200bucks for a 1975 sidewinder with a 1967 merc 1100 ss outboard. I took off the lower unit and checked the impeller and it seemed OK, although the first time ive ever seen one.I blew comp air through water tube and the telltale is peeing but I can pee harder myself, and the water is pretty hot coming out. there is water coming out the prop too, but what about the two little rectangular ports right next to each other on the back? should water be coming out there also? had the boat out this morning and it really hauls but i dont want to mess it up. can someone give me the lowdown on this motor-oil mix ratio-cooling system-common problems-etc.

It sounds like the water pump needs repair the water at the telltale should be luke warm but not hot, so a new inpeller will pobbly fix the problem. The engine is 50 to 1 oil mix with TCW 3 oil.

Yup, you should get water out the exhaust relief ports when underway. You won't see a lot of water coming out of these ports if you run the motor on a flusher, however. Exhaust backpressure from being submerged is what causes the exhaust to carry water out the relief ports.

'Spect you'll find Laddies is right about the impeller. If the blades were pretty curled over, she's not gonna pump well. When you have it apart, take note of the condition of the stainless pump insert, also the pump plate. If you see a lot of scoring or wear in either item, replace. The parts aren't that expensive and it'll pump a lot better.

While you're at it, maybe you could post a few pics of your Hot Deal 'Winder over at the 'Winder's website, http://www.sidewinder-boats.com/portal/modules.php?name=Jig

We'll collectively drool over your boat for you! Lots of good tips for 'Winder owners on that site, along with tons of history about this Way Cool boat.

Cheers..........ed
