Ok here's a synopsis: 1985 16 ft fiberglas runabout with a 1985 90 HP Mercury straight 6.

Everything was fine last time out. Boat went up to about 40 MPH. This time out whenever I tried to go up over 8 MPH or so, the motor RPM's went nuts...

I was fine at low speeds but couldn't get up on plane or go over 8 MPH....

I tooled around at low speed and looked at the motor, water output was fine and not too hot to touch. hummmmmmmmm (throttle up) and then VMUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

What the heck?

The only thing I can think of (mind you my boating experience consists of reading The Idiot's Guide to Boating) is that I spun the prop hub out and it won't grab over a certain speed.

I have another prop but I'm kind of afraid to go out again until I know what's wrong.

*Nothing* happened to the prop though... I didn't hit anything. There was a very small amount of fishing wire on the prop (not back by the seals). It was not wrapped around the prop or anything, I think I just dragged it out when I put the boat back on the trailer. And the prop didn't look any worse than when I put in.

I didn't floor it or anything to apply lots of torque to the prop.

Any ideas??

Thanks!
