Is my Upper Housing damaged?

I'm fixing the water pump on my outboard after making the newbie mistake of dry running the motor.

I'm located in Australia, and for those that arn't aware the replacement parts are nearly 4 times more expensive here compared to there prices in the USA (I'm actually currently looking into purchasing from the USA and having it posted, as it would seem this will still be cheaper) - for this reason I'd like to replace as little as possible, but don't want to stinge out and not replace something that I should have.

I've removed the lower unit, and pulled the Upper Housing off the water pump, and removed the impeller.

It looks to me like the top hole in the Upper Housing for the driveshaft has sustained some damage (the driveshaft is fine). Pictures:

So I assume that I therefore need to replace the Upper Housing. But does anyone have any ideas on what would have caused this? Can I prevent the new one turning out this way?

Can anyone confirm that the base etc should be fine? Basically so that I can determine on whether I need the Complete Kit or whether just the Upper Kit will do.

Lift the stainless plate off of the lower pump housing and it looks like the seal carrier area of the lower housing is also melted from the heat.

I'd highly recommend a COMPLETE pump assy, including the lower section.

I ended up buying a complete kit for something like $95.00 USD including insured postage, so that's a fair saving over them here locally. I thought about it and decided if I was going to do it then I should do it properly and do the entire thing.
