Is my water pump broken?

I just bought a boat with a 1965 Johnson outboard. I just started it is a drum for the first time yesterday. It appears that water pumps break on these motors a lot, and I wanted to see how to tell if mine is broke. I did notice a whole right above the water line on the left side of the motor. This hole had some very light spits coming out of it at idle speed. There is also a large hole up higher on the rear of the motor (exhaust I assumed). Going from what I've seen of outboards, there should be a good stream of water coming from somewhere, correct?

Does anyone have a way to troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Re: Is my water pump broken?

your motor has no pee tube, so you will not see a good stream of water. start the motor, but not in the can, start it with a set of muffs and youll see water coming out the prop and outa the lower unit just above the cav plate. only place youll see it come out in the can is just under the powerhead, there are two rectangular ports side by side, these are exhaust relief ports. it should kinda have a sloppy sprya action to it, just spraying out all over like a big thick mist.

only way to surely tell if H2O pump has bitten the dust is to take it out and check it.

but one thing is for sure... you need a manual. available at the bottom of this page, all the way down on the left

That was far from the answer I expected. Guess that shows my knowledge of the older stuff! Thanks for the help, I'll have to go and pull the motor out of the bin and fire it up. These motors really just throw the water out from all kinds of places like that? Weird...
