Is Nada price the best way to go?

I'm looking @ a 2001 Capri 1950 seems in excellent condition no wear and tear. He's listing the boat at just over $7k but Nada low is $4900 and highs is $5500. That's a huge price gap and I don't want to make the guy feel like I'm low balling him if Ioffered him $5k for it. I'd hate to be that "

He said it has about 200 hours on it but couldn't find anyt major scratch around the boat.

He probably owes more than it is worth and is trying to get a buyer to eat his negative equity. In this market I personally wouldn't pay more than about 4k for that boat in great condition and go down from there if it has issues. Just remember that it's a Bayliner lots of them made if he doesn't like your offer there are thousands just like it out there you can always find another.

Yeah, today is the day to get a great deal on a boat not pay retail. I was just laughing at cars in a trader here, one can buy new for 25% more than a 5yr old car, with a warranty and 0 miles. I bought several cars one year old for half of sticker. No wonder car dealers are going under all over the place. Boats hog gas too, gas would have to stay at 1.50 for a year before some people would buy. Then again I have 15% unemployment here its pretty bad.

If you feel 5K is a great deal then offer and tell him there are lots of boats you need to look at yet and its a great time to get a deal on one. Think I would start at 4 though, can't hurt. There are people that want out of them in a big way and will deal.

Of course here it is end of season so pricing falls off. In fact the temps are even dropping here might be a real short summer.

When I was just looking for a boat I saw that happen all over the place. NADA was a good 3000-5000 less than most were offering. When I asked them about why it was so much higher than the NADA they mentioned things like " The trailer wasn't include " (which it was in the NADA) or "I put about 3000 of work into the boat" which then I question why did you have to?

I think NADA assumes that reasonable care was taken of the boat. There is a notation on the bottom of the estimates noting that the condition of the boat can make a huge difference in the actual value and the NADA value - stating that it can go up or down from there for pristine boats. (I paraphrased but it was something close to that)

Good luck - if you feel unsure about an offer.. then its probably the wrong offer. Ultimately a boat is worth what someone is willing to pay for it doesn't matter what some guide says.

I want to thank everyone for all the help on purchasing my next boat.

I'm happy to say that I'm now a proud owner of an 02, 19.5 ft bayliner capri classic. The interior is slightly sun faded and there's a 1 sq ft of soft spot in the center a few inches in front of the engine cover.

3 small rips on the carpet average 6"

All the gauges looks good except one blown light bulb on the fuel guage.

The outdrive looks clean but the prop needs to be replaced. The engine bay is free of oil, just dirty from dust etc..

However, the haul is in immaculate condition, there were no chips, cracks or dings anywhere which really suprise me. Only a 1 ft rubber scrub on the boat perhaps from rubbing again the dock bumber.

The bimini top is in like new condition as well.

Thanks to you guys, I worked it based on NADA and market research and paid $4600 for the boat which includes about $900 worth of towable rafts, wakeboards and tow ropes. I think i did good. Whaddaya think?

Congratulations on your new toy. Unfortunately, that soft spot might be the tip of the rotten iceberg, so to speak. Pull up the carpet and do a thorough inspection with the tip of a screwdriver or awl. Don't ask me how I know this.

Is this the boat you mentioned in your first post?
