I recently bought a 1997 15 ft boat with a 1997 OMC 70 hp outboard. The boat had an Airguide water temp gauge but not installed to outboard. I installed a sender unit in the pre-threaded hole I believe called bosses on the engine head. I ran the single conductor wire from the engine sender unit to the gauge. When I started Engine, and ran for 15-20 minutes accelerating throttle every now and then the gauge read a temp of 175 F. It did not go any higher. Is this temperature reading to high or is it in normal range. Could you please let me know what temp range should be. Just want to make sure its not running hot before taking out to sea. The stream the of water coming form top corner of engine is really strong and the water is not hot just slightly warm. Thanks for your help in advance.

I would rather see temps around 145 deg. How long can you put your fingers on the top of the block in the rear when it is at operating temp? (2-4 sec is OK) Could be that your gage is off. Also when was the last time you changed the water pump & t-stat? You should do this if the engine is new to you no matter what the gage reads.

Thanks for prompt reply SoLittle. I took your advice and replaced the t-stat and water pump. The engine is running at 140-150 deg. now and I can place fingers on top of block at operating speed and it is not hot to a point where it burns I can leave there for much more than four seconds. Thanks Again for help,<br />SeaQ
