Is Porting The Answer?

I saw in another thread a prop that was ported and I beleive the comment was made that porting the prop improves hole shot while allowing higher pitch and therefor higher top end speed. Is this the case? If so, to what extent? Any info on this subject will be greatly appreciated. I am interested in the performance as well as the technical aspects of this procedure.

Prop for max RPM, then if hole-shot is still tough, port the prop, and the hole placement is critical.
Allowing higher pitch??? No, just an increased hole-shot if it's got the correct prop to start with.

Hi Kenny.

Hey Up,

I just read, in the past day or two, where a guy did as Kenny said. He bought this prop for WOT performance (which the new prop fixed) and was not satisfied with his hole. His words went something like "....well porting the prop took care of the bad hole shot".

Worked for him, it worked for me (on my last boat). Don't need it on this one.

An experienced prop shop should be able to do it for you, know where to put them, and what size to drill. I think Dhaley put up a diagram of a V6 OMC prop once. Don't know where it is or the name of the thread. In Dallas, TX. "James Propeller Service" is a long time, experienced, prop shop, if you can't find one.

HTH,

Mark

OK, I think the rookie is starting to learn. I need to find the prop that brings my WOT engine speed to the upper end of the mfg's recommended speed range, install a set of smart tabs, then port the prop if I desire a hotter jump. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for all the help!

I think the experts want you to do the prop last....do everything else to improve your situation (like installing and adjusting the tabs, emgine height, optimum trim position, decarb and all) then look at WOT rpms. If incorrect, fix em with the prop.

Mark
