Hi all,

I am new to this forum so bare with me if this question has already been asked.

I just bought an 87 Searay Seville as my first boat. It's in great shape, engine runs great and the boat all together was just a great deal. Hard to pass up for $3k.

I've been working hard just to clean it up and get it looking new. Under the water line it was all grimy and green/brown. So I took some very fine sand paper and just like sanded it to remove all the crud that was on there.

My first question- Was this ok to do? Did I do any damage by lightly sanding the hull?

If I were to put it in the water how it is now after sanding it, will it do any damage?

Also, is there anything that I should coat the boat with now? Gel-coat, primer, etc??

Thanks!

Go Have fun. You are fine. You made it look good!!!!! When you get home from the lake go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap buffer get some buffing compound and give her a good going over and she'll look good as new.

I'm just sayin...:D

So it's fine how it is? What can I put on it to shine it back up? Also I want to re-paint some of the stripe around the boat. Can I just slap paint right on top of what's there?

Post some pics of what you got (see my signature to see how) You might be able to wet sand the paint and bring back the shine to the paint you already have.

I'm just sayin...:D

I've seen wetsanding the gelcoats on fiberglass boat come out very nice. I use a buffer with cleaner and polish then wax. Its better than it was but I think wetsanding first might be better.

I just dry and wet sanded the 600/800/1000/1200/1500 way then buffed. I have a new boat now. They consences from professional gel coaters is to dry sand, not wet. I still wet sanded the last couple of grits then buffed.

Welcome to Iboats JV..

when you say "fine" sandpaper.. what grit was that ?

600+ you can buff out.. ( not with a wax buffer..with a rotary buffer ).

Scratches left by sand paper will leave More surface area for grime to attatch to .. so aye buff it out.. no primer or more gel neede if you didnt sand through to glass ..

YD.
