is the air silencer needed

My 65 has never had an air silencer on it. Would it run better if I could find one for it? It seems to run better with the cowling off so maybe the silencer helps direct the air or something. Also I know that there is a drain line from the silencer to the powerhead, If I have no silencer should I cap off the nipple on the block?<br />Thanks

If anything, it will make your engine sound a lot better! I took mine off to troubleshoot and couldn't believe how much more noise it made.
