Is the E-Tec as good as they say it is?

I may be replacing my 225 OceanRunner in the near future. I had planned to go to a Yamaha. Is the E-Tec a better choice? I fish mostly in salt water.

Can't pick a bad motor brand these days, just diffrent options, needs and dealers to chose from.

I was motor shopping and went to our local E-Tec and Honda dealer to inquire. We discussed the aspects of both engines, his final thought was that it (E-Tec) still hasn't proved itself to them. He was a true believer in the Honda.
I did end up w/a 225 Honda, but not from that dealer. I was able to find a non-current engine for almost 5K less than a new one, which also included a 5 year non-declining warranty. Also much cheaper than the E-Tec.

I have considered the 4 stroke. I saw and heard a Mercury 4 stroke on a boat a while back. It idled so quiet, and the engine noise was very low as it sped away. I'm beginning to agree with Woods. All the motors seem to be pretty good. My Johnson is 12 years old and I've had good service. Just a lot of talk about the E-Tec.
To your point "gss" I agree, the E-Tec has not been out long enough to prove itself. On the other hand, I see a lot of small boat commercial fishermen in Florida who run the Yamaha.
I haven't even considered the Honda. If they are connected to the same technology as the Honda small engines, I'm sold. I have several Honda small engines and none of them have never, I repeat, never failed to start. Are they the same company?

same company. look around where you will be boating, where can you get service. honda's problem is not a lot of service centers.

Don't know if you are worried about weight but 4 strokes are pretty porky, the E-tec weights alot less than a 4 stroke and has less service needs so you have a lower cost of ownership.
That said you can't go wrong with the Yamaha or the Honda and they get better milage which is huge with gas being what it is.

I would do a pros/cons list for each motor, price, weight GPH ect and see if you can't find one that sticks out.

If I were buying a new motor I would get Yamaha 4 stroke but that is me and I'm not.

I(E-Tec) still hasn't proved itself to them.

A buddy of mine is a factory tech for the e-tec. He made the same statement quoted above. we were talking about a particular e-tec he was working on. It took several weeks to get the motor fixed. Some fuel issue. The tech support had them try everything. They sent log files and all the data the computer had captured to finally just replace all the injectors and fuel pump.

If it were me...I would wait on an e-tec until they had more data available to workout all the issues. Like any other new item on the market they have yet to work out all the bugs, in time i think they will be great motors. My buddy did say that the motor was screaming down the river on a 20 foot aluminum boat.

Re: Is the E-Tec as good as they say it is?

dunno
but the BRP warrenty works well.
I blew my 07 175 E-TEC on an 18 hydrasport at 15 hours, took it in the monday after easter and friday afternoon the new fully dressed 08 powerhead was sitting on the shop floor in a crate.
other than that I have liked my e-tec about as well as my F150 on my seapro.
only nicer thing is I wont touch my E-TEC but I am stuck working on my yamaha, could be cause I am a yamaha tech not a BRP tech :)
but I cant holler about it, I see all kinds of powerhead failures as well as all kinds that simply run for thousands of hours.
all mechanical things break, some sooner than others.
what your looking for is factory support with the product you purchased.
