Is there a correct way to install an impeller?

I have a 1999 Glastron with 305 GM engine and raw water pump. I have looked at numerous pictures on the correct position of the impeller splines for the raw water pump and they are different. Is there a special way the impeller HAS to go in or will the splines fall into correct position as the pump rotates?

Is there a front or a back to the impeller - looks the same to me. And, where does the plastic tab that comes with the kit go..in the back or in the front of the pump? Thanks for the assist since I'm now questioning my install.

Just look at how your engine rotates. make sure the vanes are pointing in the opposite direction of the engine rotation. They pretty much flip over on there own anyway but this gets them pointed correctly from the beginning.

Hope this helps, The Tab or Tabs ( in my case I got 2 ) goes in to fill the hole after you install the impeller, make sure you twist the impeller gently while pushing down on the impeller to get it into the splines, I used a little marine grease on the spline and it slips in without much force. Then the tabs goes in,,etc etc.

BTW, make sure your inner seal is still good. Good luck

Thanks - I put the plastic in the back..figuring it was some kind of bushing for the impeller to housing. I'll change that and double check the splines rotation. I believe I have other cooling issues that are not impeller related.
