Re: Is there a correct way to start an inboard engine?
There are a lot of folks who never had to deal with a carb.
I suggest you try pumping the throttle 2 or 3 times, leave it open perhaps 1/4 and crank.
This will set the choke and squirt a little gas directly in the engine.
It should start right up unless it has been sitting for a long time.
In that case crank and pump a few times.
In some cases this could lead to flooding.
If it still doesn't start try opening the throttle wide open and crank. That will clear a flooded engine.
Be ready to get it back to idle when it starts.
Unlike fuel injection, each engine with a carb will be a little different. Trial and error will show you what yours likes.
Perhaps one pump will do it.
Sometimes no pumping at all.
Sometimes a lot of pumping is required.
Note, this is for a cold engine only. If a warmed up engine fails to start try a pump. If that doesn't do it, try the open throttle thing. Some engines flood when warm. The carb will need attention if that happens. Perhaps only a choke adjustment.
