Hey everybody, I've got something of a puzzle, for me anyway. I'm going to replace all the seals and orings on the lower unit as the 2 times i have changed it it has had water in it both times it has only been on muffs in the yard, but anyway. According to this diagram on shop.evinrude.com

http://shop2.evinrude.com/cgi-bin/I...47\18.tif&ilSC=80&ilIV=0&ilBR=0&ilIF=P&ilRE=8

That is the actual parts diagram the motor I have is 1968 Evinrude 55hp selectric.

It doesn't show a gasket under the impeller plate but from what I remember there was one under there, the l/u rebuild kits from sierra show an extra gasket but that could be for the different type of shift covers. Anyway if anyone knows for sure that would be a big help.

You have had water intrusion in the gear oil simply by running on the muffs? If so, that would pinpoint the failure.

Some of the aftermarket kits have a gasket for the impeller plate in them. Some guys dont bother with them, I usually install them. Some guys seal the plate with metal to metal sealer, but I dont bother with that either. Just seems to make a mess.

Yes on water in the oil just from muffs. No on the pressure and vacuum check as i don't have the guages, but I figured replacing all of the gaskets would fix it as it has been sitting for 13 years and they are most likely the original gaskets.
