Is there a special marine grade wire for trim sensor?

Is there a special marine grade wiring for the trim indicator sensor on the out drive or is it the same as automotive? The wires on mine are extremely deteriorated to the point that they crumble in your fingers, which makes me wonder if someone else replaced the wire with a wire that is incompatible with marine applications. Also what type of lubricant is used inside the sensor? Std. di-electric grease or again something specifically for marine applications?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When the wire is dammaged the unit has to be replaced as spliceing it will cause corrison problems from the stray electric currents

Thats the factory origional wire, it crumbles away like that when they get old. Like tommays said, the whole sender needs to be changed. They come with the wires attached to the sender. Just bite the bullet and, "Get Err Done".

If your sender comes apart, and you can replace the wires from the senders to inside the boat (completely) you maybe able to do this.

Why it's not reccommended ....... If water gets at the wire it will wick into the wire (under the insulation) and corrode it inches up the wire and fail soon.It will also wick down into the unit, and destroy it as well.

Also getting thru the transom with your own wires is another challenge .They are under the waterline and have to also be sealed so water won't enter the boat.

So maybe the Mercruiser kit is a better bet.about $90.

If you try this repair dielectric grease would be okay, but my choice would be BPR TripleGuard.

Thanks for the information. The wiring inside the sender appears to be very easy to replace, so the idea of rewiring it for a few bucks is interesting. Do you recommend a method of sealing the wires in the transom? I haven't pulled the old ones out so I am unfamiliar with how they are sealed. Am I correct in assuming that I it is std. wire?

If you're going to replace just the wires, Tinned wire is more durable to the marine enviroment than regular copper wire.
Here is a link about the Trim Limit and the Trim Guage switches. Also included in this link is a descriptive "How To" instructions.

FWIW as Reel Poor mentioned marine wire is pre tinned, it also comes bonded to the insulation which BTW is also a special grade.
