I have a 1986 Merc 35. I've been told this is the same frame as the 45/50???

I've been told that I could change the carb to increase from 35HP to 50HP.

I don't know if I believe this or not so I wanted the advise from y'all here.

thanks

think there is also a diff. in the exhaust porting.
a parts list from each motor will show any/all diffs.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: Is there a way to increase HP

thanks for the replies. That's what I've been looking at. Buying a used motor in the 50hp range, but thought I would look at all options. Can't afford a new motor (can't get enough justification to the wife). My Merc 35 runs great, just not enough umph with more than just me on my boat.

Thanks

Re: Is there a way to increase HP

Hi Kelton,
The 35hp is VERY different from the 50hp. They share the lower units only. The 35hp was a big-bore twin-cylinder, while the 50hp was a small-bore four-cylinder.
The 35hp was previously a 40hp, but they dropped the rating to 35hp when they started rating them at the prop rather than the powerhead - didn't really change the motors, just how they rated them. Adding more revs to the 35hp platform isn't advisable, as they had a tendancy to snap cranks when overstressed.
- Scott

Kelton, by putting that in writing you have initiated the last-forever switch in the ignition which means this engine will never die and you are stuck with 35 hp forever

Kelton,
In the meanwhile, you might want to try a lower pitch prop(Couple inches) when you have more of a load on the boat. Just switch it back to the original prop when you are running solo. Only takes a minute to change them out. Just a thought to get you by, until that new motor comes about..
