Motor seems to run much better with cowling off....I was told it could be a leaking pwerhead to exhaust gasket...any way to tell with out taking the powerhead off? ..........also on a side note: there what looks like melted epoxy that is all over my power head and has hardened. Could this be a sign that my motor was overheated at some point?

If it's brownish, it's probably from a stator that's on the way out. You should be able to tell where the exhaust leak is by feeling around the powerhead base while idling. The adapter gasket is the most common cause of exhaust leaking in the cover.

Take the hood off, start the mtr and run some fogging oil through the carb. Get it to smoke good and you may find the leak.
