If they are made of plastic or vynil, you could use a heat gun and normally after heating up those for a minute it is possible to peel them. don't stay too long on the same spot to prevent damage to the paint.

Smoky

thisoldboat,

I did a name change last weekend on my new-to-me boat. All you probably need is a "hair dryer" to warm the surface of the plastic decal. It will pull right off - if you can scrape an edge loose. I used a new 1" plastic (DONT SCRATCH THE GELL COAT) putty knife to get a suitable edge loose. Worked great, took about 15 minutes to remove all ten letters (~ 8" high)

Once the vinyl decals were removed I used an orange scented "goo remover" (hardware store) to get rid of the adhesive that remained on the surface. That took another five minutes. Washed with acetone, washed with isopropyl alcohol, and installed the new name.

Total job took less than 1/2 hour. Now we need an official christening and renaming celebration -so that King Neptune will recognize the new boat name and treat us with some compassion.

My dad used to work for a caravan repair company and apparently they make their own plastic scrapers/knives for scraping stuff (like stickers and silastic) off the thin painted aluminium that covers a caravan. all you do is find an old piece of perspex-type plastic, cut it into about 3in long by 1 inch wide strip then sand (with a belt or disc sander) the thin edge to be sharp - kind of like making a woord chisel out of plastic. - This is less intrusive than using some other types of scrapers (like the razor blade type) and you can easily re-sharpen them when you need to.

Just a thought

T

Most marine centers sell a small spray product called "sticker off" It does not get easier than that.

You already have WD-40 on hand....use it and a rag; might not even need a scraper. Then use acetone, alcohol or grease remover to clean off the WD-40. So easy...

Watch out for bad Karma-Changing a boat's name has traditionally been looked at as a way to bring bad things upon the boat and the captain. There is a ritual for changing a boat's name that should be followed-superstituion-yes-but I have bought a "new boat" and do not want to tempt fate. My wife and daughters want the name changed, but I have told them that it is bad Karma to do so. The ritual can be found by doing a web search, if I can find it I will post the address in a later post.

Boat renaming ritual-this is the link http://www.nsc.ca/boatname.htm I have seen this ritual, or one similar to it in a couple of places. Also you should pay attention to the issue of the number of letters in a boat's name and whether it brings good luck or bad luck-unfortunately I forget the old adage, whether you should use an odd number of letters or even number of letters, and which one brings good luck.
