I take my boat out 3-4 times a year. Pardon the expression but it is a POS but still runs great and I have a blast with it. I only carry comprehensive and only need to cover the boat when it is trailered or in the water. Other than that I dont care what happens to it.

I think you mean you only carry liability. Comprehensive would be full coverage and would cover it if an act of god came into play.

For me on my 16ft aluminum with a 25hp merc, liability is less than $70 a year. Using Geico(I don't remember who the underwriter is on marine policies) Have you asked.your insurance company? I know that kind of insurance is available on some RV and tow campers, personally I just find it easier to keep it all insured year round. But then again I use mine more than just 3 or 4 times a year.

One other thing, when the boat is being trailered it should be covered under your auto policy. You may want to double check, some cheap auto insurance companies will give you a hard time if your trailering anything, and haven't claimed it.

Our boat is on our homeowners policy. It's covered under that at home or in the water, and covered by our truck insurance while being towed. I do believe you can purchase it by the month if you want. Our's is around $90/yr. for $12K coverage with the same liability, medical, etc. as our homeowners policy.
