Gas is spraying out of this part (fuel filter??) I took it apart and it is just metal to metal. Is there supposed to be a gasket between the pieces of metal i'm pointing at?

Thats not the fuel filter, it looks like the fuel pump. I am not too familiar with the 4 strokes though. what is the model of the motor?

without even looking it up i can 99.9% guarantee there will be a gasket - buy a rebuild kit for it probably about 30 bucks - easy to do .

oddly emough my parts book doesnt list a 1999 4 stroke ( could been build date dependant ) however a 2000 model shows that gasket as actually being the diaphram itself which creates the suction from the fuel tank - you'll want to replace that before you go out again or you could be paddling home .

so here is the part list and here are my parts - my part for # 9 and # 4 are different sizes- they do not span the exterior of the metal like the pic. I guess Ill order them- i don't understand why they are different shapes.

part#9 - the pic. in the book is probably from an oldder model -its just theer as a visual refrence - the part you get should be correct

part #4 - wait til the parts come but i suspect you will be prying out the black square with round piece in the middle as 1 part - unless the they sell that whole side of the pump as 1 unit -which makes it even easier .

I just got my motor out from the basement and tried firing it up today and I am having the exact same problem as you were. It worked fine last fall. I didn't see this one coming. Did you have any luck replacing the diaphram? Did you have to replace part #4 as well? Mine seems to be spraying out only in the area of part #9.

I tried to order the parts from mercury and they said that they no longer sell part by part like the photo diagram shows. They are sending me a "diaphram kit" that I should get saturday or monday. I'll be sure to update with my results and pictures.

yes - usually they sell the parts in a kit ,it just makes good sense to do it all ,when you replace individual parts in something like that the new parts tend to find faults in the older parts and you end up in a cycle of constantly replacing individual items - sorry to hear about the back order issue - have you tried aftermarket - like (marinemanifold.com) ?
