Is this a 135HP or 85HP Johnson???

To date I have been assuming my motor was a Johnson 85HP due to the model and serial number on the stern bracket. But now I have uncovered the welch plug and find different model and serial numbers.

Welch Plug:
Model number is 135ESL75E
Serial number J4333712

Stern Bracket:
85ESL-73M
J3894160

So far, everything has been tuned up and most equipment has checked out as a 1973 85HP. But the powerhead has a 'bubbleback' instead of a flat exhaust cover.

What I don't know is if I have a 135HP on a 85HP mount; do I have a 135 HP powerhead on a 85HP gearcase; or do I have a frankenstein with a mish-mash of parts (block from this, heads from that, gearcase from here, mount from there, etc.)?

Thanks Ken,

I wonder what other shade-tree stuff has been going on!

What you have is a far better setup than the 1973 85HP ever was. The 1975 135 has a bigger bore, a better ignition system, a superior cooling system and much better parts availability for the engine.

Beyond the engine, the rest of the two motors were pretty much the same except that the gear ratios on the 135 motors were slightly different.

So far it's looking like someone put a 135 on an 85's stern mount. that's great for me! I was so worried that I had a 50/50 motor with a little bailing wire and duct tape int there somewhere holding it all together.

It's getting wet tomorrow to see if my repairs are in order.
