Is this a bad thing?

I finally got around to dragging out my 7.5hp merc that a "friend" sold me for a hundred bucks. Threw it in a drum of water and took the cover off. This is what I found.

Looks terminal to me. Anybody have any other suggestions?

Yep! top to bottom down the side of both cylinders. About as wide as the thickness of two pennies stacked flat at its widest.
