Hello gang! I'm new so take it easy on me!

I have a 2000 200 saltwater series Yamaha with about 1000 hrs. NEVER had a problem until yesterday--was in gear slowing backing up and the engine died.
Tried to restart it a number of times--just acted like it wanted to start, then died.
Towed home--need help...

Water fuel sep--looks OK
Fuel in the fuel filter in the engine
1/2 tank of gas.

Should I just replace the fuel pump?

Thanks!
Capt. Chuck

No, Chuck.

First find out what is wrong. Parts changing is the most expensive and among the least effective troubleshooting methods.

Go to FAQ and follow the troubleshooting steps listed in "Outboard Wont Start". That will isolate your problem to a major system.

Let us know what you find. Even if the trouble isn't obvious by then we can help you find it and get her running again.

Good luck. :)

Good luck.

Re: is this a fuel pump problem?

hello
a few quick checks.
when you first turn thekey to on can you hear an electric pump whine? you can drain the vapor seperator to check for water. you need to put a gauge on the medium pressure fuel pump. I find many times its the fuel filter on the medium pressure pump is so clogged that fuel wont flow.
that motor has 2 low pressure mechanical pumps with diaphrams that rupture. at 1000 hours its time to drop a couple nickels and replace them just as a precaution. most the EFI problems are fuel related not ignition but it can be. if your not familiar with trouble shooting then take it to a trusted tech.
good luck and keep posting

Re: is this a fuel pump problem?

Thanks for the help guys!

I think I have isolated the problem to a bad primer bulb and water in my gas....

I fixed the bulb--but the water/fuel separator keeps filling up with water. the fuel filter on the side of the engine shows no sign of water--but she still stalls while at idle on the lift after running 1 minute or 2.

I keep draining the water from the bottom of the filter--but I gotta get it off the lift soon.

would I be safe by fillering her with fresh gas and then just keeping an eye on the fuel sep?

Capt. Also, find out where the water is coming from. Was it bad gas or possibly the fuel tank vent is allowing it in. Check it out and run it on fresh fuel and keep a close eye on the W/S filter .

Re: is this a fuel pump problem?

hello
if its water in the fuel it is imperative to drain the vapor seperator. if you have water in the VST then it will be injected in the engine regardless of if the engine runs or not. if you suspect water in the fuel then drain the filter, drain the vapor seperator, hook up a remote tank at the engine filter or the intake side of a hull mounted water seperator. if you have water in the fuel and it destroys a powerhead there is a good chance it wont be a warrenty repair.
water injestion is not covered.
good luck and post us back. but trust me on the mechanical pumps. they go bad and they can roast a motor real quick.

Guys:
THANKS for the input!
I don't think I ever introduced water into the engine as I kept a pretty close eye on the fuel filter next to the motor--that little red ring stayed on the bottom the whole time.
I replaced the entire water/fuel sep and think I eliminated the problem---had it running smooth on the lift for about 10 minutes without a miss ...hopefully that was it --cause I'm heading 20 miles offshore tomorrow!
AGAIN-THANKS for everybody's help!
Capt. hello
carry a spare water seperator or at least pay up your tow boat US. you will need to find the water source or it will cause any aluminium tanks to corrode from the inside.
good luck and catch the big ones
