Hey guys.....I am just trying to get into boating here. My friends all have boats so I thought it would be a good time (especially since I have a 1 year old) to get the family out.

I am looking at a dealer that is selling a boat on consignment for someone. It is a 2000 Bayliner 2050 LX. The thing is in immacualte condition. It has the 5.0 motor, full cover, bimini top, gps, and trailer included. I was on the inside and couldnt spot any weaknesses in the floor or anything of the nature. The guys is asking 9995 for it. I am looking to just cruise around, tow a tube some other things behind it, and get up to some speeds when I feel like it. Do you guys think this will fit my style and what do you think I should offer the guy for the boat?

Thanks and look forward to being part of the forums here shortly.

For a starter it sound ok. It should be several thousand less. Be sure to take a safety course and do not learn to boat or explore new area's with a 1 year old on board.

http://www.boattrader.com/find/listing/Bayliner-2050 CAPRI BR-98697411/?ZMC=Oodle&BAC-Oodle this boat ? if this is it looks really nice in pics......having friends with boats is cheaper than owning but,,,,,,my two cents it seems a bit on the high side......maybe more like 5-7k guessing the guy selling wants 5k and stealer is making as much as they can.....just a guess though looks like that would be the "type" of boat for you

Thats the exact boat.

And trust me guys, safety is number 1. I have had boats in the past but they were always smaller and hand me downs from the grandparents. Nothing compared to something like this though.

I was thinking of offering 8K to the stealership and seeing what they say. You guys think thats a decent price or should I go lower? Also, anything in particular I should check first and foremost? from everything I have read, everyone says take it for a test ride. I am not sure that is possible though since the closest lake is about 1.5 hr away (not sure they would be willing to go for it).

Yeah that boat is very overpriced. I got a 2000 19ft Maxum w/ a 4.3L for $7,500. A 30 less HP, 1 foot smaller, 10 years newer, and a lot more modern, w/ better construction.

According to NADA it says the boat MSRP was $13.5k when it was new, so talk about very little depreciation.

I would agree, price is way too high. Maybe 5 - 7K max, and I doubt if they are going to come down that much. I would keep looking, and be very careful buying that old of a boat.

I have to agree it is overpriced. I bought a 1999 Sea Ray 210 with low hours, wake Tower, wake speakers, amp, sub for $9000 last year.

WTF in your first post you said it was a 1990. The ad states 2000. Anyways I would never buy a used boat without a sea trial.

You might want to update your post an Audi A4 from 2000 cost a lot different than one from 2010 :p

The price isn't as bad for a 10 year newer boat, than u originally posted, I would try negotiate a bit, though if they put a warranty on it and let you test drive it then it might be a decent purchase. I think 8000 would be a great deal for you, $9,000 would still be pretty good if they give some sort of warranty and let you test drive it.

Re: Is this a good buy for a newbie????

just noticed that also.....90 or 2000 makes a difference but,,,,I still think he is high.....still 11 years old but,,,,,how many hours ??

If you get around to negotiating they will take it for a sea trial as long as you put non-refundable money down.....which means so long as it runs as it should you do not back out of the deal or they keep the money......does not run right you get your money back and have all of this in writing signed and you keep a copy

that is they should take you out for a sea trial.....no boat ride....no buy....

My brother has the identical boat. He bought it for $9k from a friend three years ago. The thing screams. It handles pretty well and gas isn't too bad on it. He's had some minor done to it. The engine would randomly stall and it turned out to be a defective layman switch. He also had some work done to fix the gauges. Other than that, it's been a pretty reliable boat. Not sure what you're towing it with. He had a 2003 Ford Windstar Minivan and it worked, but wasn't ideal. He just upgraded to Dakota so he's good now. In the outdrive pic, is that oil on the pavement? You have to figure this boat spent a lot of time in rivers. Look for any outdrive damage from impacts. Look for chalk, bondo, or JB weld patches. That sort of thing. Also it looks like Quakertown isn't far from the ocean so you might want to look for saltwater corrosion. I would have an independent Marina look at it before you sign papers. Good luck!
