Re: Is this a good deal??

Could be a deal... could be a money pit. Depends on the circumstances. Even $6K sounds way high IMO.

I've heard that you can get crate motors for under $2000. Then you have to install it yourself.

Why is the engine down? Abuse? Neglect? Does not say. If the engines was abused or neglected chances are so was the drive unit.

A long Block motor would be in the $1200./$2000. range.....If all the Disassembled parts are any good.......
A bobtail engine would be 2 or 3 times that......
What kind of condition is the rest of the driveline in ?????
And,
That $12,000./$15,000. is Retail, sitting on a Dealer's lot, with at least a minimal warranty..........

I Don't Know,..........6 Grand sounds Pretty Steep to Me...........

I would figure it as if it had no motor at all and go from there.Charlie

If it were local to me you can bet I'd be looking it over. I don't think I've ever sold anything at my asking price. This guy might be sick of seeing it in the driveway.

If you have spent the time / money Disassembling the engine it would seem to me youve found something that makes it not worth your while reassembling. As per crazy charlie Id look at it as if it had no engine.

mmm lets see
a blown motor on a 99 model. a boat worth 12k and they did not fix it? mmmm
I would suspect it either sank or froze. either way you can figgure the motor and accessories are done for. a 5.7 EFI has no cheap parts. but if he will give any info as to why the motor is dissasembled maybe. but always remember my words. AINT NO good deals with a boat.

That's what I am suspicious about -- why don't they fix it? I'm sure they realize it is worth more running than not. Something big is probably holding them back that is not making it economically feasible to do it themselves.

My Guess.......................

It's an Insurance Buy-Back............... ;)

Motor Froze, or Some How Destroyed,+ Somehow the Ins. Co. was hoodwinked into Paying..........(for Someone's Stupidity)

(edit)
You got in over me dk........

That'll Thicken the plot a little........

Some Guy Trashes his Motor,
Hires a Wrench to tear it down,+ diagnioss the problem..... Suckers the Wrench into Scamming the Ins. Co., to cover the deductable, in exchange for the Future Repairs............

Then,..... He Skips with the Check......... Screwing Both the Wrench, + the Ins.co...............

I'ts hard to say Gary.

I bought my current boat as part of an estate. The rest of the family were not boaters and did not want to mess with it.

It was repo'ed. Just like when they forclose on a home, I bet the previous owner beat the living crap out of it prior to having it "removed" from his property.

If you could get it for 4K, then I'd jump on it. A new 5.7 EFI is gonna run you big bucks. If you did all the work yourself and you did purchase it for 4K, all said an done you have nearly 9K into it. If you could sell it for 12K (depending on the title situation) you'd have to justify if your labor and time is worth the 3K profit. Not to mention what the other have said about the rest of the running gear. I only assumed that the outdrive and gears were in working order.

Good luck with what ever you choose to do.
