Is this a normal sound? I kinda don't think so or I wouldn't be posting!

This is a mercruiser 228 sbc 305 at idle speed. Sounds not so nice. I'm an outboard guy. What do yall think?

Here is 1400 rpm. A little history from my other post about thermostats. Boat was free. Boat is junk. Motor had 2 gallons of water in it. After 2 oil changes oil is clear and no more water. Trying to figure out if motor is good. It makes a rukus but is it normal rukus? Its a motor from the early 80s so I dont expect it to be butter smooth but I also don't think it should sound like a school bus either.

kinda sounds like a pulley scraping against something? I guess you know you have water leaking from that rad tube....

Oil pressure is "about" 35 psi idle and 40 psi at 1400 rpm. That is if the oil pressure guage is accurate.

and there is water leaking from a few spots. That's not a huge concern. If I decide to run this boat it'll have all new hoses and such. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth my time. If its just bearings on the lower end that's no big deal. Dont really feel like tearing apart the top half of the motor. Theres too much stuff that moves up there ;)

That was my thought and honestly my hope. I can change rod bearings and main bearings without removing pistons right? I've done a full rebuild on a small vw motor before but it was OHC. Since I have to take the motor out of this boat anyway, I'm thinking it cant be that bad to take the crank to get polished and put new rod and main bearings in. I've rebuilt a few outboard powerheads but not sterndrives.

Water pump bearing? Drop both the belts off and try again (just for about 30 seconds). Those belts and pulleys look in pretty bad shape.

It seems a bit aggressive to be the water pump but it cant hurt to give that a shot. The noise just seems to have more weight behind it than a water pump would have.

Sounds like a rod to me too. But there is some sort of scraping sound as well. Bad circ pump?

It's something "deep" inside. A journal bearing more than likely. As long as you're pulling it...no big deal.

Well it is coming out tomorrow. I wont have time to pull the pan until late next week but when I do I'll report back the findings.
