I own a 87' 85HP Force, I have been told it's unhealthy for the engine to be ran at slow speeds for trolling, is this true??

Not as long as you decarb. regularly. Do a search on this board using the search words: decarb.

There's plenty to read.

I have heard things like this for years and still do. As far as I know it is nonsence. If your motor is tuned and maintained you should have no problems. Some people with a big motor on a small boat have problems getting the thing to go slow enough. But then tring to fish from a ski boat doesn't make sence anyway. Then you see another bunch that will drag sea anchors, buckets or other junk behind the boat or use trolling plates. All of this is rediculous in my opinion. Current, tide, wind all effect boat speed. You just need to carry the proper tackle for the speed that is dealt by conditions. Don't try to make your boat, motor and mother nature work to your favorite lure.

only damage i can see is fouling a spark plug now and again from excesive low idle. Far as you can prove by me, no other damage will occure. might not charge the battry at trolling speeds, but that is a different issue all together.

What djohns19 said.

If not, fouled plugs are the least of your worries. Carbon build up, then stuck rings, then lowered compression, then poorer burning and more carbon buildup, then harder starting, then a broken ring, scored cylinder wall, damaged piston, rebuild. Do the decarb.

Decarbing is a 2 part process. One preventative, done by using a fuel additive to prevent carbon build up. SeaFoam is such a fuel additive and can be found at most auto parts stores. It works as a fuel system cleaner and should be used as a preventative maintenance procedure.

If your intent is REMOVE the existing carbon buildup from the cylinders, heads, and rings, then a spray decarb solvent product is needed. Buy at least 2 cans of decarb. Some people use one can per cylinder.

Run engine at fast idle, with engine running
spray liberal amount into each carb,
spray some more, spray a larger amount into carbs until engine chokes out and stops,
remove spark plugs and spray decarb liberally into each cylinder, install the spark plugs, let it soak for 1 to 12 hours.
Start the engine and run at medium throttle, or if at the lake, run it at full throttle. It won't hurt to spray some more through the carbs. Run it for atleast 10 minutes to flush the crud out of your engine. Now remove and clean or replace the spark plugs.

If you do this on muffs, don't do it on the driveway or up against the garage/house. The crud blown out of the engine will make a mess.

Not to change the subject of the post, but do EFI motors have carbon build up as well? Any need to decarb them by spraying the mentioned solvent into the cylinders?

Prolonged idle is hard on the needle bearings and crankshaft throws. Under low pressure, needles tend to slide and chatter rather than roll.....
