Hi!
I just was laying in bed dreaming of our first boat and how much fun it is going to be, when a jolt of panic ran through my body thinking of a recent incident. I tried to wake my husband, but he lays dead asleep and would probably tell me no big deal anyway.
But I need an answer, and so far this forum has been instrumental in making me feel at ease, being a new boater.

Here is the situation. 1964 Runabout, 12 foot long boat. When we brought it to the car wash to hose it out, my husband sprayed inside the front of the boat with a high pressure hose, I was on the outside and saw water seaping from the seam where the top meets the hull. Hope I am saying that right. I ask the hubby if this is okay, he says 1. the water doesnt go up that high 2. there is not a way for them to seal it so there is a seam there and that is why water comes in

OKAY, Help my troubled mind! Is this a cause for alarm? Should there be a seam there, should water come in/out?
Thank You
-Weary Boater

Felix,

Yes, there is a seam there. That is the deck/hull joint. Sometimes they leak, most times they shouldn't.

If your boat has relatively high sides, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yea, in 1964 it most likely didn't leak, but it's probably been leakin since 1974. won't hurt any, but if it bothers you, you can crawl around the inside of the boat and caulk the seam with some silicone. Try not to loose anymore sleep over it.

Not cause for alarm, but where my hull and deck were joined, spray while running was getting in . If you find water getting in( not a problem mind you wrt safety ) that is a place to look. I solved my problem with silicone sealer.

How do I get my wife to lay in bed and dream of boating? I do that every night and she thinks I am weird.

This is a good reason to make sure your bilge pump works or you don't have one.. Get one.

If the bays water is that high up on your hull you have more problems then just a seam drip. You are going under.

The only dreaming my woman does about boats is the dream that one day she won't have to walk through the resin stench and fiberglass hell I have turned the carport into.... :D
