Is this charger working properly?

I recently bought this charger, and using it to charge a standard deep cycle Everstart from Walmart (120Ah or so, I forget the exact capacity).
Schumacher SSC-1500A Ship 'n Shore SpeedCharge Charger with included battery clamps : Amazon.com : Automotive

This is the first charger I've ever owned so bear with me here, I'm looking for advice. I used the battery on my trolling motor on Saturday. Used (according to the MK's battery meter) right at half of the battery.

I put it on the charger at 15A and set it to "standard" (this charger claims any of the settings will charge deep cycle just fine).

A couple hours later I checked it, and the meter was reading 16 volts, and 100% battery capacity charged. It never kicked over to the trickle/maintenance charge. For fear of a malfunction, I unplugged and disconnected it. The battery and cables were NOT hot, they were room temp.

Now the battery reads (no charger attached) 13.4v.

Can anyone explain what's going on?

Subscribed.
I bought the same charger and am curious how your results turn out.
In fact, I just put a brand new group 27 deep cycle on it (to "top it off") at the 2 amp setting and it is only reading 38% after 2+ hours.

Re: Is this charger working properly?

That is Totally Normal.
It will charge at full CURRENT up to 16 volts. Less if set to AGM or GELL
Then it will charge at a Constant 16 VOLTS as the current is reduced to almost nothing.
That is why everything was cold.
It will run for a another few hours at a very low charge current reading 100%. Normal Topping Charge.

Then the "Charged" light will come on.
It will stop charging until the voltage drops to about 13.3 and then charge for a few second up to about 13.9;
It will repeat this maintenance cycle every minute or so, until disconnected.

If you restart it, it will go through the charge cycle again, but only faster.

It is operating as advertised. Have patience! A watched Battery ....

Schumacher makes a nice charger with a cheap Fan.
When you get tired of listening to the Fan groan.
A Ball Bearing Replacement Computer Fan can be had for $5.

New Wet cell batteries are not fully charged when you get them.
If it was in the store for a few weeks, even more reason to charge it.

The 2 amp setting is for MotorCycle Batteries.
2 amps will take about 40 hours to top off that 90 amp-Hour Battery.
2 amps will maintain a full battery not charge one.
