Hi

Just recently got my first boat, the motor is mercury 25hp from 1998 but its only been running for 10 hours or something that according to the previous owner. Today i changed the impeller and changed oil in the gearhouse. When we started the motor water was coming out from the top hole in a steady stream but not with any power but there also was alot of water coming out of from mid section aswell, hope everything shows in the video.

:welcome: Revblackpercy to iboats. Nice for you to join us...

Okay, I would say that you have a water pump issue. It looks like the water pump output tube is not fitted correctly in the water pump housing. But that is just a guess without seeing anything else. It is not supposed to be water coming out in the mid-section like that. So it looks like you will need to open up the mid section and see. And depending how long it has been since teh water impelor has been changed, I'd buy a new one and replce that one while you are there. JMHO

I would guess when the lower unit was installed after changing the impeller, the water tube wasn't lined up or isn't into the port in the powerhead.

Your video is a tad dark to really see anything.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, Took out the lower unit again this morning and replaced the rubber ring that sits on the driveshaft and checked for leaks, is the water pump housing supposed to be 100% air tight? Tried blowing air in water pipe but couldnt feel any leakage round the waterpipe or driveshaft. Took a new video hope you can see better now. Got another question about my serialnumber its say 0P001071 and 25ELRC and model year 1998 but when I try looking it up on mercury parts list I cant find the right motor?

I think GA_Boater is on the money.
Water tubes either not seated in the rubber grommet or the rubber is compromised. Or may be as easy as dropping the LU and take another try at lining the tubes up. šŸ»

If that second video is after you went back in, then you still have a problem. The water tube that goes from the water pump housing up to the engine has to be installed in a grommet at the engine area. And I think yours is either not fitted in the engine area correctly or the grommet is missing or bad. So I do see you are going into the unit again. This time make certain the water tube is fitted in the head/engine unit properly. And verify the grommet is good and tight as well before buttoning back up. A good exploded view would be very helpful. See if you can locate one before going into the unit again. I found a break down at boats dot net. Go there type in your Mercury manufacture and then search by HP. Then look for your HP (25) and select your type and it will go to a page with possible serial numbers. Pick the first one and open up the pictorial for the drive shaft housing and have a look. You will see where and how the water tube goes. Also make certain the water tube itself isn't split or has any holes in it. JMHO

Took it all down again but took down the midsection first to confirm that the waterpipe was fitted right on the engine which it was. Checked the the gasket there and the one on the pump no problem with those. But then i hooked up the motor flusher on the lower unit only and manually rotated the driveshaft and saw some water sipping up under the rod for the gear changer, could the problem be a gasket under the this?

Yes that can be a water intrusion source as well. But you may have to go into the gear case to change that boot/"O" ring seal system. Do you presently have any water in the foot oil?

No Title

I have a 1995 20hp that leaks in the same place.Mine is leaking around the shift shaft boot. When I first start it there is no leak and after several seconds the water bubbles up through the shift shaft hole. And on mine the water is warm so I assume it is water that has passed through the power head. The motor is new to me and the person I bought it from changed the impeller. I was there the day he did it so I know it was done. I also thought maybe there was a problem with the water tube or the rubber seals. I removed the lower unit to check. And i sprayed some water through the tube with it attached to the motor and it seemed OK. The seal at the pump is new on mine so I dont think it is leaking. The boot on mine is creased and I cant get it seated. I am waiting for a new one. This is just something for you to look at and it may not be your problem. EDIT I also checked the gear oil when I bought it, and after I ran it for a few hours on the lake. And no water in gear oil so I hope it is just the boot letting water out.

On the break down for that engine there is an "O" type ring in that boot area as well. You may need that too.
