no idea what that spluge is... probably the least of it's problems.

the other pics are the worst areas. looks pretty pitted. will gasket sealer seal that?

i'm not real hopeful of the comments to come.

if it were not nla, i wouldn't even think about using it. even though i'm not real flush on bread to be buying a new one, if i can get one.

brush or blast everything first, then a couple of coats of Rustolem and it shoud be fine.Once installed a spray with undercoating would help too for the corrosion.

like in wire brush? blast with what? like in sand blasting? i'd have to find someone to do that for me. i'm a for real back yard marine mech wanna be.

that surface is wire brushed right now + emery clothed.

rustorleum? paint on the sealing surface?

i was thinking extend (that stuff that turns rust into something other than rust and turns the surface black when dry)or the likes.

Ayuh,... I like the Extend,... Then topcoat with Rustoleum...;)

For the gasket surfaces,...
I've been a Fan of Yamabond sealent lately,... found at Yamaha bike dealers...
It seals stuff like that, but is reasonably easy to remove later, unlike Sillyseal...
Coat the gasket,+ bolt it up....

Yes, but use a GOOD RTV sealer on that gasket surface.

Use the high temp / oil resistant "black" RTV by Permatex, Zig. Good stuff! I've seen alot worse pans than that used. lol

Hi Guys:

The pans on all three of my L6 rebuilds were just like yours! I also used Permatex with the gasket and they all performed well. I also used the Canadian version of Rustoleum on all paintable black engine parts and prefer it to the Mercruiser product.

Re: is this L6 pan serviceable (update)

to late now. the pan was used.

the old pan that was leaking did in fact have a paint bubble in it with a pin hole. this rust spot was right behind the drain plug. hopefully the new pan will work out. maybe a test run this weekend and look for leaks. if it don't rain.

with a plan in mind it was 3 days of shadetree marine mechincin in the back yard, just to change an oil pan. whew..

side note.

i got extremely lucky on one part of the replacement of the engine. the alignment. when i removed the engine, i moved the from mount adj. all over the place, totally lost my starting point. so i put the engine back in and says to myself. there, that adj. nut looks about like the right place. good grief. alignment was perfect. i never moved the nut after install. better alignment than any of the last times i did it too. bar slid in and out so smooth. two fingers. checked at 12,3,6,9 too. that just amazed me, infinite adj. and its right out of the box..... amazing, and i ain't the lucky type either, but i'll sure take it..

sure hope i don't have any leaks.
i used permetex ultra black rtv.....
