I took my lower unit to a mechanic that does side work for $45 an hour. Friend gave me his number.. My unit was grinding going into gear, thought it was clutch dog. I was gonna have him take the carrier nut off and pull the parts so I could fix it. He said bad idea and that he should do it.. Turns out all the gears are good, and clutch dog is good. There was a lot of water in the unit, so thats what made it grind. Also slightly bent prop shaft. Said he has a used shaft, and will put 3 seals on the lower end for $355. That price too high? I want to do it myself, he said the shaft is $170, but again said he should do it. Any suggestions?

Neither water in the unit or a bent prop shaft will cause a unit to grind. So no that's not a good deal, The prop shaft can be straightened by and good machine shop, with the unit apart you can reseal it and if the clutch dog and gears are really good the engine probably has a twisted upper shift shaft put a new one end and that should solve the problem. This guy is not being very factual with you for some reason.

Laddies, your reply is truly what makes the internet what it is. How else would someone else get that sort of advice pre-inet? iboats and the inet in general just plain rules.

I agree with laddies on everything. The only thing I do different on these repairs is to replace shift cam and install new style follower(3 balls) they shift more positive an seem to shift smoother. These are parts 48 and 49 in diagram :D

Alright, well thanks for the response. I was about to dump a lot of money in this thing, and had a bad feeling about it since all the gears were good.. I am still stumped on why the thing was grinding, from the motor, you could see that it was going all the way in to forward. I will get all of my parts back and go from there, thanks again. and by the way, the unit was off the motor when I took it to him, and he couldnt really figure out why it would grind either, didnt say it was the shaft, just said it is possibly the water, and that he would want to put it back on the motor to check it out him self.

I'm sure that you to **** it into gear fast.. slow shifting will cause grinding and cause damage to the clutch dog.. (just a reminder)

yeah, i do. i had a 76 johnson and never had a problem shifting. this one, fist time out, it grinded like hell, it would grind until you have it gas, it would not shift idle... you would also have to pump it sometimes, and it would catch, knock, and catch again.. so i was convinced bad gears or clutch, but they seem to be okay, laddies said the upper shift rod, im going to check that out. all i know is from the motor, where the cable connects to, it shifts all the way forward. dont really know what to look for from there..
