Looking at a new boat, and notice some high rpms, got out to look at the prop, I gave it a tug towards me, and away from the boat, the prop moved out a little, 1/8" or less, is this mormal or a concern.

seems nornal to me all gears have to have some back lash and end else they would prematurely wear out. But if u do but the boat get a repair manual for the engine most questions like yours are answered in the spec portion of the manual

Unless this is a very unusual gearbox I would think the bearings on the propshaft are naff,or the indent spring is broken. The prop should move in towards the gearbox about 3mm then spring back out. This is the indent spring working.Either way I would check the oil in the gearbox for water & metal. If you still want the boat be aware that the gearbox needs work & adjust your offer accordingly. :)
