Is this supposed to be like this?

I recently almost lost my motor, which tore up the fiberglass on the transom a little bit. I took off the aluminum molding from the top of the transom, and discovered that there was a gap between the fiberglass which left the wood showing on the back top corner of the transom. It's a 1967 Starcraft, the wood doesn't look bad, should I seal the aluminum strip that covers it? .. or fiberglass it closed?

I recently went to much larger size cables for the steering, which did not have a problem holding the motor up out of the water. So the motor is still in good shape.
