Some of you may have been following my posts. I was originally looking to buy an outboard on maybe a tahiti, kona, or carlson hull. I primarily want to just cruise around the lake this summer BUT WANT TO BE ABLE TO SKI/WAKEBOARD when I can afford the equipment(wakeboard, rope, etc...)

Would the following boat be a better choice over the 1968 Carlson Tunnel Mod. w/ 60's 100HP Merc?

New Prospect:

$1600
1974 glastron that runs excelent, Motor is new, everything works, outdrive lift etc. new carpet and seats ready for the stripers. model is v174 with a 270 outdrive all volvopenta.

here are some pictures:

I tend to favor outboards, too, especially for new boat owners, but...that's not a bad boat. If the motor and drive are truly in good shape, it might not make a bad deal.

Are you going to be able to get the owner to take you out in the boat before you buy? If so, then do it. If not, ask why not....

I had a Glastron years ago and found it to be a very good boat. We used to do a lot of water skiing at that time and it was fine for the purpose. You would find that this I/O will burn less fuel than a large outboard but they are a pain to change oil and that sort of thing.

I skiied for 10 years behind an OMC 140 (not sure of the horsepower on the Volvo). Anyway, deepwater starts were fine for me and a skilled skier of any size. It really struggled though with a large skier of limited skill. If they were strong enogh to dig a hole, they would. If they were skilled enough to help everything along then no problem.

If you meant "ready for the striPPers", I'd watch . . . ;) :D

That motor looks VERY clean and I haven't gone to check it out yet - but he said it was a new motor. I still don't know what boat I should get! This one looks like a good deal because the motor is "new". All the outboards I am looking at are about the same price (if not more) than this I/O and they all have USED 30+ year old Merc's on them.

I am also looking at this boat now; a guys wife is selling it because they got divorced and she ended up with the title. She wants $2800 for it though:

It is a 1974 something or other with a 115HP Merc.

But again, I want something I can have fun and cruise around the lake in - but also function as a WAKEBOARD boat (and no - I don't need anything that spits a HUGE wake - I just like to slalom around on the wakeboard!)

Just for kicks, call around to see where you can order parts for the engine/drive. Especially the carb parts. Or if service is even available in your area for that model.

I think the above advice is excellent. Especially about recommending OB over IO. I owned a '70 Larson that is not too different than the above Glastron - although from my folks owning a Glastron I can tell you that the Glastron is far superior hull.

We own a smaller Outboard bowrider and it is the boat we were looking for. The negatives to the Larson were that it was too big and heavy, repairs were a pain as stated in the earlier posts, and we hated the closed bow. I am surprised that you are looking to ski / wakeboard with your choice of boat and have two closed bow options. CLOSED BOW IS A HUGE WASTE OF SPACE. Unless you absolutely know that you are only going to go out with you a driver and observer, than I think you should consider an open bow. It takes a REALLY big boat to be roomy with a closed bow. Oh, the boat we have now is the 5th one we've owned.

Re: Is this THE RIGHT BOAT for me? Is it a good deal?

I don't know, but I'd skip that '74 something. It might be a nice ski boat, but it's not going to be that good as a cruiser. Darned flat things pound the water if there's any chop at all.

If you're looking for a multi-purpose boat, run away from the flat, skinny things. They're pretty, but not much fun for general boating.

I think this is especially true if you're a first-time boater.

But...that's just me.

Here's the deal, as I see it: Given your indecision on what kind of boat to buy, I really urge you to insist on a ride in any boat you're considering. If the owner won't take you on the water in it, just walk away. Without seeing how it handles and performs on the water, you're really buying a pig in a poke unless you have some experience.

You've shown us photos of several boats, and they couldn't be much more different from each other. Each has its place in boating, but you're not going to know how it feels until you ride in it. After you've made the purchase may be too late, and you don't want to regret your choice.

Take your time. Take a ride in any boat you buy, and don't go for glitz over comfort. That's my advice.

I'm personally a fan of older Glastron's, especially the older Carlson's. The Glastron you've posted here, sure looks nice.

Personally, I prefer a bow rider...it adds a lot of room to the boat. Have you checked the classic glastron site yet? There's usually nice well taken care of older one's for sale there.

Just a thought.

I feel the same way dorelse. My folks had an early 80's 17 1/2 foot Glastron bowrider. That boat was very SOLID. Had Johnson 135 and Caulkins trailer. Very nice rig. Could haul people, ski (I pulled several people barefoot) and even throw out a line if you want to fish. Tons of room! I miss that boat.

Jeff
