My dad and I got up early to hall a load of trash in our pickup bed trailer, an old chevy.

The trailer's rear end was makeing some noise when we picke it up, we got on the highway and pulled it at about 55-60 mph for about 15miles.

We got to out dumpster and unloaded, then I noticed that the tire on one side was sticking out, it must be a two peace axel and the thing come loose and was coming out. We couldn't leave it at my dads resterant so we tryed to make it to a auto repair shop where we know the owner, about 5miles away.

We where going slow and heading down a hill the whole axel, wheel and tire slid out, now the tire is sticking out about four feet from under the body, We lumped into a truck yard, and left it there, my dad knows the owner of the yard so is should be okay.

We just came home so my dad could have a beer and make some calls, we are gonna have to have a flat bed tow it to a buddy garuge, but its to wide to fit onto the flat bed, we are going to go back and jack it up try to slide the axel back in.

I;ll take a picture of of when we got back, its funny as hell :D :D

As long as the axel did'nt break or get hosed up, I'd say it's fixable.. Probably just the C-clip fell out...

Re: Is this trailer messed up??

Thanks snapper,

I've never worked on a rear end before, I'm pretty sure its not broken, and its cast metal, so it shouldn't bend.

Is this C-clip thing a part that we'll have to buy, or can we just fix the old one?

It it costs hundreds of dollors for parts to get it working again we'll prolbey dump it and make another one, but it think its fixable.

We where going to have it towed on a flat bed, but now we are debateing towing to the the guy who going to fix it.

We'er going to wait to dust to tow it when its cooler and not as many people on the road.

If we jack it up and push it back in, we think we'll be able to tow it again if we go slow. We're looking to about five or six miles.

What do you think?

You are probably gonna have problems if you tow it without fixing it first the axel will pull back out when you go around a turn. I would try it if it was me. you could keep an eye on it and when it pulls out jack it up and shove it back in. it shouldnt cost hardly anything to fix.

Yea, thats what we're gonna do.

We'll only have to make a few turns to go where we wanna get it. We have to pull out of the parking lot its in now and go striaght for a while, for you local guys we have to travel down R.3A or "Boston road" from the middle of burlington to Billricka, its a two lane road that turns to one lane in "ricka" speed limit is 45, but we should be able to stay around 20mph or slower at night. I'll let you know how it go's.

The "C" clip they speak of holds the axle in after you slid it back through the spider gears on the side of the rear end housing.
It will more than likely be laying there in the housing, down in the grease.
They uesally don't come out unless there is some play to let the axle in far enough for it to fall off.

We went back, and I took some picts just for you guys ;)

We jacked it up and pushed it back into its normal position, we hooked it up to the truck and started slowley toward the main road, we didn't even make it out of the parking lot and it was out 8 inches, there's no way we where going to make it so we had to leave it there. Tuseday we'll have someone fix it for us, It can sit where it is for a few days.

Here's what it looked like when we first parked it: http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/v222/ryanwhaler/DSCF0177.jpg
http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/v222/ryanwhaler/DSCF0180.jpg
http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/v222/ryanwhaler/DSCF0179.jpg
http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/v222/ryanwhaler/DSCF0178.jpg

And this is where the wheel should be!! :D :
http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/v222/ryanwhaler/DSCF0182.jpg

by looking at your picture you got some major problems aint no C clip the bearing is supposed to be in the hub and it looks like your bearings are awefully dry so the outside one is probally shot causing it to come apart

Yea that's real nasty looking for sure.
That bearing, seal and all should be up in the rear of the hub like jimr says.

Re: Is this trailer messed up??

Personnaly Ryan, I would find a straight trailer axle and put under it. It could be bolted right to your springs. Using what you have for farm use is okay. Highway use is a differnt, it will take more power to pull it which means more fuel consumption.

I have seen this happen to many of these type trailers. The ring an pinion is not meant to be used this way and it causes the clip to come off or break.

Straight axles can be found for less than 150 and your hubs should fit those chevy rims.

Good luck Ryan

You've got the nice base to a good trailer, 1ton suspension, but that rear end hasn't been maintained.... I'd go with the above advice and just get a trailer axle (www.championtrailers.com) and bolt to your springs. You give them the dimensions and they get you exactly what you need.

Re: Is this trailer messed up??

One of the best things about the trailer the shocks, it dosn't bounce, the shocks give it a nice quiet smooth ride, if we put a regular axle will bounch around.

The rear end has been make some funkey noises for a while, its not a newley made trailer, its been about 8years, maybe more since we made it. When someone moves out of a rental unit we hall everything they leave behind away in that thing, and out dumpsters around about a 25min ride on highway away, its good because when standing in it you are close to the same hight as the dumpster, but stuff get lifted onto the lader rack and pushed in. Before we used it for that it use to get towed to Maine and back every week, so its been well used. If we have to put a new axle on we'll look for one from a truck do we can put shocks on it, it really tows like a dream, we love the trailer

Not to long age it was filled with crushed stone, we put sheets of plywood on all four sides and filled it to the top of the lader racks, it was prolbey to much weaght, the leaf springs where looking more like a "n" then a "u", could have have done it?

I think this is a "floater" type axle. The hub and bearings are held onto the axle housing with a large nut. The axle shaft is then held on the hub with the bolts you can see around the outside. The nut must have come loose and allowed the hub and axle to seperate from the axle housing.
