You may need a jack plate to adjust it to the correct height because it's a long shaft motor, but otherwise it should work well. I would try to talk him down a bit, but assuming it has good compression, spark and fuel it should be good to go. I use a 3 hp as a kicker on my 14' aluminum boat and it moves me along at about 5 mph (approx).

It should do OK, I have a 1985 6hp & consider those motors up to about 92-93 the best of the lot before they went to a lot of plastic parts. They are simple & easy to work on if the time arrises.

Im going to go check it out tomorrow I will definitely try to talk him down a bit, and will check for compression, salt water damage and other things. If I get it I will post some pics tomorrow.

Clock, That should work great and look good w/ your other Johnson, I'm wondering what is meant by extra long. Are they saying a 25" or is it really 20".

We have a 7.5hp on a 21' Mariner and it will troll down to 1mph.

Let us know if you picked it up.

Re: Is tis a good trolling motor

Well I went out to have a look and their were a couple of issues, I was about to pull the trigger on it, but decided to hold off until i saw what you guys thought.
First thing that I noticed is that it was hard to start....then after it started it would die at high rpm or low rpm and definitely would not idle (he said the gas was old)
second thing was that i think my compression gauge was bad because it was reading 30lbs in both cylinders, I also noticed alot of exhaust and water coming out of the vents.
So after all of this I told him that I would have another look at it later with a better compression tester... what do you guys think?

Test your compression tester on something else like a lawn mower or your car. Compare it to one you know that works.

Sounds like the motor may have a head gasket issue to me.
