Fouled a plug last week after the motor had been running great for quite a while, so I tossed some new plugs in and also decided to rebuild my top carb because I noticed it was spitting fuel when I took the carb cover off recently.

Rebuilt the top carb, put everything back together...fired up the motor on the hose and it fired up but was idling really quick. So I just barely backed down the spark lever ever so slightly and boom it was perfect. Idling nice and smooth and strong without any popping. Checked each idle/mixture screw on the carbs and they right, gave the motor a couple short quick low RPM revs and it was strong and smooth.

Brought the boat to the ramp, launched and fired it right up and idled away nicely (might need to step up the idle a touch but not much) and then got into a go fast zone and hit the throttle and it ran great for about 15 seconds and then something happened/cut out and suddenly it felt like I was running on just two cylinders. Limped it back to the dock, messed with it for a minute, but everything seemed right so I tossed it back on the trailor.

I checked the brand new plugs and they look just fine, fuel connections are right and tight, linkage is working as it should, I dont know what could have happened. Any suggestions? This is a Johnson 60 year 1991 3 cylinder

Re: Issues Again!!!

Start by testing spark, ensuring it jumps the gap of the inline tester a good 7/16 of an inch with a bright blue ZAP!! Then heat the ignition components with a hair dryer and test the spark again.

Figured it out. Just before I attempted to check spark...I noticed that one of my throttle linkages was knocked off. What must have happened was, when I took off the carb to rebuild, I must have knocked the bottom linkage loose and then between trailoring the boat to the ramp and running the boat for a short period of time knocked the linkage completely off. This is why it was overlooked, because I never intentionally took it off.

All is well again for the Johnnyrude 60HP
