Hi All -

I just acquired a Apex 12' RIB with a Merc 25 EL (25 HP 2 stroke; 2003). The lower unit leaks a fair amount of oil when warm / hot (equivalent to 1 or 2 of shot glasses). The lower unit is very disclored (white and black). It should be all black as rest of the unit is.

I am afraid it has been grossly overheated. I'd appreciate any advice since i am rather new to this. I did run the boat and it was rough, spark plugs very oilly (carbs too rich despie a allegid rebuild this year). The boat, without touching the controls, would accelerate wildly and had to place in neutral / turn off key.

If it has been heated up - is it a few seals or replace the entire lower unit. I'm fairly handy and have a few friends who are mechanically inclined, not necessarly nautical.

Thanks for your advice.

Tx-

First there is no way to overheat a unit, it is underwater. The stripping of paint looks like it might be caused by electrolysis and the leak should be repairable with a seal kit.

On a difficulty level of 10 (being the hardest) - what would you rate this job?

Thanks for your help. Glad to hear I was looking too extreme.
