It begins - tilt and trim motor

in my previous post you may have read I’m trying to resurrect an old boat with an engine that hasn’t run in a while. Took out the old plugs and hit the cyls with tranny fluid and let it sit and then tcw3 - not trying to start it yet. Just verifying what’s working and what isn’t. Turns over by hand easy, but it was never locked up.

I want to pull the LU off to do water pump and impeller. When I hit the button I hear the motor going, but no movement. So I’m guessing it’s empty? Or maybe seal is blown or something. So off I go to open the bleed screw, and it is stuck in there. Hit it with some PB and let it soak and still nothing. At this point the slot is starting to strip. So before I completely screw it up, any other ways to get the engine lifted? If the screw does strip out is my only option a drill and tap?

thanks for any ideas.

For instance - my one thought was to remove the circlips and knock out the bottom pin. Would the whole trim motor then move with the engine and I can support on the trailer “lever”?

If you hit the up button and have a helper, will lifting the motor make it move up? I just went through something similar with a burnt out motor and the engine in the down position and had to get creative in an earlier thread. Good luck with the bottom pin.. if you can get it out it will work but i doubt it will budge.

Can you at least get to the fill plug? If so remove it and fill the reservoir if its empty. In my case, I ended up drilling the release plug out and using the largest ez out that i could to turn the valve. Be careful here. Use a quality tool and if you think it will snap - stop.

no - can’t reach the fill because of the position the engine is in.

all advice I read was to drill it out - so I used a small bit and went through the plug - still can’t move the engine.

Maybe be a bigger hole? Haha

my father in law has my easy outs, so I’ll grab them tomorrow. Or maybe have home come by and be the helper.

PS - you were right on that bottom pin. Ain’t movin. Guess the weight from the engine is holding it?

idk, usually just seized like hell but the weight surely isnt helping. Since you already drilled it, try the ez out. Id drill the hole as large as i can.. but be careful. The head of the bolt is significantly larger then the threaded portion so its easy to drill the treads out by mistake. Look up the part and you'll see what I mean. not something you want to be tapping id imagine.

Ugh. I’m just worried she’s fully jammed up. And I can’t see a way to get at the trim motor without lifting the whole engine off. And that’s out of my tool set.

Times like this is when I try to keep cool and develop a can-do attitude. I almost gave up and took mine to the shop until I decided Im not letting a bolt defeat me.

So.. why do you need to get at the motor all of a sudden? I though its working and hydraulic pressure is the issue.

Don’t really need to get at the trim motor specifically. That last post should have said “tilt and trim assembly”. I’m resurrecting an outboard that hasn’t run in years. Need to get it tilted up to remove the LU and get at the water pump before I can get her started.

Quick TLDR - I’m restoring a 1980 Mako to its former glory for the widow of the original/previous owner. He passed away earlier this year. Her son is an acquaintance and not mechanically inclined. So I bought the boat and motor untested but thoroughly reviewed. I knew there was a lot of work.

Worst case I’ll tackle the cleaning and scrubbing while I figure out the tilt and trim and motor.

Got it. hopefully we are talking about the same part here but here are pics of the hole I had to drill and the size of the extractor I used. Hopefully that helps.

Also, When I drilled far enough into it I got a good spray of hydraulic fluid and the pressure released some. Is it possible you haven't drilled all the way through yet? In the pics, I *just* barely drilled through.

Yep - same part. Maybe I didn’t drill all the way through. I didn’t want to go too far.

I’ll get back after it tomorrow and see if I can get a picture in the close area.

Broke 2 easy outs and nothing... but there was a hole in there.

so with the cunning use of a jack I was able to incremental lift the engine up to the trailer stands.

hind sight I would have done that first and likely could have saved the system without having to remove it. Ah well. Lesson learned! Onto the next issue.
