Back again. I have a 1979 Merc 115. My mechanic that I bought it from has just rebuilt it for the 3rd time this summer ( thank God he gauranteed the thing). Now he is saying the number 2 carb(the one for pistons 3&4)is not sucking.BTW the reason it was being rebuilt was a rod bearing ate the side out of #3 piston. Any thoughts why it won't suck through the carb? thanks

Hi, Schmoedog.

Could be bad reeds for that cyl. More likely is a bad gasket on the bypass cover.

Good luck. :)

If the mechanic says that the carb won't "suck" I'd get a new mechanic. Carbs direct the flow of air and fuel--they don't cause the flow of air.

If you are not getting air/fuel flow thru the carb, the problem is with the powerhead somewhere. Either the reed valves are not closing, there is no compression, or something in there. It has nothing to do with the carb itself, other than a complet blockage in the throat of the carb (not likely)

John W

Thanks you guys. Reed valves is what I was thinking. I'm beginning to wonder about my mechanic. He's supposed to be the best around but he's teaching his 19 year old grandson how to work on these things and I'm thinking my motor is his guine pig.
