Well I guess that no truck can live forever and mine is no exeption.

I was on the way to work the other morning and as I was going arround a long curve the motor started to miss realy bad and it sounded like there was a bolt bounceing around in the valve cover....realy hard.

I can't say what it is yet....procrastinating the surgical prosses of engin dismemberment.

It was up on its oil and all....I guess when its your trucks time to go....it go's.

I travle 80 miles plus a day for work purposes and after a couple of years of that and 178,000 miles....I have been told that I am not a gental horseman....It is kaput.

Lead foot and all it served me well and I can't complain to much....Now I will try to fix it.

Now the fun begins.

Derwood.

Re: It rolls no more.

Sounds like it was an old friend Truckwood. I have had some that I have been sad to get rid of and some that I couldn't wait. Maybe it is just a broken rocker arm. Probably wishful thinking, but worth a hope.

Hey Derwood,,
just for kicks,, pulll the plugs,, inspect them,, make sure an electrode didn't break off. that happened to the mrs's brand new motor last month,, thought it was another major engine problem and it was just a faulty spark plug, they removed it, and put in a new piston and rings for me,, and that was it. if it was up to the technician, he would have just put it back together and ran it without the new parts.

good luck!

Derwood,

Sorry to hear that.

I can't remember what kind of truck you have. I thought you said it is a Ranger.

If it is, and you have a 2.8L V-6, you probably just popped off a rocker arm. That engine has mechanical lifters. Just put it back on.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to adjust them all. You'll really wake it up. Don't worry about the bottom end (crank) that's bulletproof.

If I lived next door to you Derwood, then I'd offer to help fix the truck or bury it. The only charge would be to catch and eat one of them Spanish Mackeral like toe one you caught.
Come to think of it, did the truck know you caught that Mackeral, you showed an awful lot of attention to it. Perhaps the truck is just sulking!
Ross

'Mechanicwood", just a thought. If it was still running any at all, might want to check the timing.
If you have not replaced the timing chain and stuff, that might be the culprit.
They have a fiber gear from the factory(wonder why) and after years they will get brittle and it could have wore them down enough to jump one tooth or two.
Just pull the cap off the dist. and bring that #1 up to the top of the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing. That will tell the truth on the timing.
Hey just my .02 worth. :D

Re: It rolls no more.

I'm no mechanic, but if that's got the 2.8 baby 6 in her, they were know for oil pump problems. That would explain the full rez of oil with conditions otherwise. Your description of it's last ride makes my hair hurt when I think of what happenned (rod), but hopefully it's something minor. I still see alot of the older body style S-10's running around so they must be tough old buggers. Especially up here in "salt country" where things start rusting out after 4 years. It IS still a Chevy, so you got that going for you. We have an old part-running truck at work - 89 Chevy fullsize, original 4.3 and the odometer quit working 2 years ago at 495,000... first truck I ever saw that wore out the odometer :D

good luck in your search

Derwood,

I think the wife always gets the good rides. We got a Honda Accord recently for her. Talk about nice, I love to drive it, power everything.

I drive a car to work for gas mileage (100+ miles round trip to work). It is over 175,000 miles right now, I hope it keeps going. My truck has about 190,000 miles on it. Replaced the plugs and air filter this last weekend and I think I got a new truck.

Ohh, I gave up the option for a new truck. I am going to pick up my boat that got a new Re-Power tomorrow.

I had a motor that made a rattle all at once, and let me tell you it wasn’t good. Broke a valve retainer and dropped a valve into the cylinder. Talk about a mess.

Sounds like you poped a rocker, shouldn’t be much.

Good Luck MechanicWood.

I broke a rocker on a pushrod style v-8 once, sounded just like you described. Hope it's that simple. If it is you can just pretend it's worse and drive the wifes car around while yours is being "fixed" for a few weeks.

Re: It rolls no more.

Derwood, I know what you mean about the wife's ride. My S-10 doesn't have any air or automatic, but it does get good mileage. Mine has been sitting for a month because it is chewing up the new tires I put on her. I did some front end work and got an alignment, but the tires are almost gone. In the middle of summer when it is 97 degrees in the shade I wish I had the wife's vehicle. The past 2 months, I have also enjoyed the power on the car she drove, We have the luck to have a new van too,but that is going in for it's second warranty repair in 7,000 miles which is 2 months. It's a Honda. Doh! I can't win. Same problem as first time too.

Derwood, sure hope you can fix it.
Sounds you lost a true friend.

Do not despair all will pass, the sun will rise tomorrow, and the wife does not need to know you can fix it. Can you take the ac, automatic, 4 wheel drive out of her truck to fix yours, with out her knowing? Sure you can cause you da Shadywood.

Good Luck
Rick

Hey Der,

If you're gonna shady it, why not put a 2-stroke Johnny under the hood. You'd be the talk of the town...not to mention, you'd be a celebrity every time you filled up and then poured a quart of outboard oil in your gas tank!

Give it some thought! If your area doesn't require emissions testing, you're all set.

Re: It rolls no more.

Allright....here's the skinny.

I dismembered the old gal today between rain clouds....Bout an hour....and I saw a bueatiful thing.

When I got the valve cover off one of the rockers was sitten at and angle with the push rod free.

I put the push rod back in place and it stayed loose as a goose.

The rocker nut is not loose....Hmmmm.

What the h#ll....I'll crank it to see whats workin and whats not.

Plap...foop....ka-rumble, rumble, rumble.

It's alive....Did'nt expect it to start.

Its pumpin oil (all over me...I love it).

Push rod is jumpin all around....thats a good thing.

It would seem that I bent a valve half way through the cycle....thats better than all the way down.

Other than the miss in that cylinder I don't hear any jaw clinching noises....whew....thats good.

looks like all I'm going to have to do is take off the head and go for a ride down to the speed shop for a valve job.

Provieded no other complications arise....I still have to get the head off (without breaking a head bolt or exsaust manifold bolt....PLEASE LORD) and have a look-see at the piston just to make sure....I think I can get away with about 120$.

I'm guessing about 80$ at the speed shop, 15$ for the new head bolts, 10$ for some Exst.manifold bolts and 15$ or 20$ for a new head gasket.

I'll charge the wife 2 fishing trips and a pumpkin pie for the labor....And she'll run like a top. (the truck...not the wife)

Better add 40$ for a new EGR valve....looked pretty nasty in there.

I might drive the toyota (a 750$ rice burner I've aquired for getting to work and back) for awhile and do a little street roden to her as an "I'm sorry for bending your valve" apoligy.

I feel better now that I've gotten all greesey and dirty....and I'm going fishing tommorow....I feel downright rambunkcious. :) :D :D :D ;)

Hoofenwood.
