finally got my '79 rude 85hp rebuilt and after a new battery i got it to start YEAH!!! the only problem i encounter now is that after sitting for a while it is hard to get started again. after i prome the bulb, i have to crank it , choke it, crank it, turn off the choke, crank it, choke it, crank it, turn off the choke, and it will finally start and run like a champ. now i marked the choke linkage on the carbs and the choke solenoid before i took it apart so it should be pretty darn close to correct now but does this sound like a choke linkage adjustment problem? also ran the engine and read the voltage at the battery at 12.6vdc. is that a good way of checking to make sure the charging circuit is workin properly? thanks for everybody's help with my rebuild questions------the info i learned here is priceless.

Best way to check is to have someone else hit the choke switch while you look down the carburetor throats to assure that both chokes are closing 100% and at exactly the same time.

After that you can adjust the choke solenoid for both or the linkage if the two are not in sync.

When you start the motor cold, raise the warm up lever, then choke and start together until it fires.

The easiest check of the charging system is to get a voltage reading at the battery with the engine off. Then start her up and recheck. The reading will increase if the alt is putting out OK.

NO, it's not. Link and sync is setting the WOT timing. Completely unrelated.

You should get at least 13.5 VDC for an idling motor if the charging system is working.
