Seeing as I am new to this site, I might as well insert my little story. My father had a basket-case old 5hp murcury(about a 1950)in our basement. Well, I was a budding mechanic(this was like in 1977 and I put it back togeather and brought it up to the lake that they were vacationing at. I mounted it to the bracket on the 17' canoe(we normally had a 1938? 3hp on the canoe) and tried to start the motor. I finally got it to start, but it started up at full throttle and I've never seen a canoe take off so fast! I think about 10' of the canoe left the water. The engine died after about 5 or7 seconds of WOT and when I looked back at shore I was maybe 300 yards away. Those old Mercs where underated on HP,so Iv'e heard. Boy, the good ol days. PDS

Good thing you know how to handle your canoe. Must be the Northwoods in you... A canoe with ANY motor can really dangerous (fun, funny). Sooooo, did you have a paddle to get back to shore???

CalicoKid, yes I did have a paddle(never leave shore without one. That happened 25 years ago, and with the exception on one year(canoe got killed by a dying birch)I have always used canoes with motors. It's not for everyone, though.I freind of mine managed to put my old canoe dorsal fin up, twice, in a ten minute span. Both times the little motor was running. No damage. He's what I call a pontoon person :D There are land lubbers and there are people with balance
