I'm back. Update on the 'ol boat. 1978 Steury 19 ft with 1978 Evinrude 175 hp. Rebuilt
lower unit, new gears, seals, the works. Cleaned cylinder bores, water passages, and carb throat.

Boat has been out a number of times and runs like a doll while in the top end. However, will
frequently stalls or chokes when going from idle into forward or reverse. Sounds like a fuel problem
but need a few quick checks to do before taking it out of comission. Can keep it running with
the warm up lever up, and shifting to forward gently and quickly. Any ideas???????

fuel pump
lines
connections etc?????

Any help appreciated.

I agree, sounds like a fuel problem. I'd start with the real easy stuff first like taking a close look at the fuel line for cracks and/or loose connections. Replace the fuel filter. Check primer bulb to determine if it is going soft while you are having problem. If the motor recovers while you pump the bulb, you've definitely got a fuel delivery problem.

Once you exhaust those, I'd start looking at the carb for old fuel deposits. Particularly pay attention to the jets. If a jet is plugged, cleaning it with some aerosol carb cleaner should cure your problem.

Let us know how you make out.

Cheers.
