Old '66 6cyl inline replaced the distributor, rotor etc, after about an hour of coaching it, sputtered and started, now it starts every time, but I still have couple of problems, seems like when it starts it seems to idle high and I can smell raw gas, I don't see any coming out of the carbs, also if I engage the prop it makes a loud bang, but it works. What's my next step.

Re: It started!!!!

It sounds like the low speed adjustments are to lean, they must be adjusted in the water in gear and the reason it bang when shifting is also idle speed adjustment (to fast)

So I can remove the propellor and run the engine in a water tank?

Re: It started!!!!

i'm not sure i know how to start a new thread so i'll start here. I just purchased my first boat a 14' starcraft with a 35 hp mercury it has an external oilblend pump is this reliable or should bypass this and mix my oil and gas I did get it started after 3 years of sitting in a gravel bed and seems top run good and start every time. I have not run it in the water yet because the transom needs to be replaced. if I should boycott oil blend system what mixture should I use in the external tank?

Adjustments can be made while the boat is still on the trailer; at the ramp.

Or; you can tie it securely to a dock etc. Idle adjustments are just that....at idle speeds.

The reason that such adjustments are tough to make on muffs or in a pail of water has to do with the back pressure of the exhaust when it's in the water.

And Pete; you really should start a new thread. There's a button near the top of the page.."New Thread"

Good luck lp.....if you haven't already...read Clam's FAQ about doing a link-n-synch on inlines. He describes the procedure so even I can understand it (sort-of...)'

Thanks for reading, Chuck
