So I got the 454 rebuilt and re-assembled. Thanks to many on the boards.

Here she sits on my stand ready to go.

Here is a link to a 45 second video.

I love the sound of the Rat Motors!

All and all the starting was great, we had some troubles priming the fuel injection system (air in the lines) so she did not fire over as quickly as I wanted :D

This week I am re-painting the bilge and doing the final installation this weekend. Have to be ready for Lake Powell.

Some other pictures:

Original Long block: March 19th... man was it that long ago !!!

Many thanks to everyone who helped!!

Yow Baby!

Your video needs better audio though!

Refresh our memories with a picture of the boat that it's going into and a little more info on the that aftermarket EFI setup! (I would love to put EFI on my 454!!)

I like that RACOR filter you have on it too! what model is it?

Nice job, sounds good.

If flat, no idling til cam break in.

Audio... yea, I guess that is what you get with the new camera... But damn does it sound sweet.... I love that crackle...

Here is a picture of the boat: This is me thinking about how much work I have to do last summer at Lake Powell :confused:
deans_boat.jpg

The EFI is a Marine Power (now Holly Commander Throttle Body EFI). works really well, the idling is awsome, I never have a problem with it and setting it is really nice. Cold starts work well and they say it is +30HP, but never compared it. Will not complain.

I got it with the boat, and I still have the carb and original manifold, but no reason to replace it. When we went to start it, we had no stability in the idle/run. The PO indicated they had some problems with "fuel delivery", but I think the problem was air in the system, which was caused by returning the line back to the Fuel separator, when the air is gone, works like a top, but you have a lot of bad performance until that happens.

We had to do some adjustment to make it work, but then it jumped to life. Looking at returning the fuel directly to the tank, not the Filter.

Fuel filter is a Racor 660, 90GPH, with a 10micron filter. Required for the EFI. The pump is a holly 12-920 480 PPH pump. You need 40GPH at 45 PSI for the EFI.

I am so flipping excited to get back on the water. Should have started the re-fit last fall, but you know how that goes:)

Flat only... maybe next time.

We are planning on following the 20 hour break in process out of the Service Manual. 1500 RPM target... figure we will go out a few nights and spin circles in our local lake...

I know I am being nosey but what did the Holley EFI system set you back?

not nosey, but I don't know, got it with the boat. I will ask the PO who installed it, I want to say something like 2500?? but don't remember.

Going out now to prep for BilgeKote painting... It has finally stopped raining... which is really weird for colorado, we normally don't get any rain... it has rained for 3 days (made for fun camping:)

You'll like the Bilgekote.

I used their primer and followed their directions spraying it with an HVLP gun.

It worked as advertised!

This was how it looked after I ripped out the High Tech OMG 460 King Kobra

After a bit of reglassing to clean everything up and drying out the transom, and then painting with Bilge Kote

Nice Bilge. hope mine looks half as nice. I am not pulling the transom parts off, I may regret that later :)

I have sanded, and washed with acetone 3 times... still not clean, or flat, but should be ready for the bilgekote.

Here is what it looked like when we pulled the motor.

Before we replaced the side soul wood.

The soul on the side was pretty shot, so I figured might as well replace it. There was also a couple of "dividers" between the motor and the sides, I cut those out, should make working on the motor a little easier.

I will post what it looks like before we start painting later..

ugg that acetone is harsh, see if solvent works to cut the grease, I put some in a spray bottle.

I used a degreaser first, took out the majority of the loose stuff. The acetone helped to start to get the bad stuff and some loose paint...

I worry about it starting to peal up because it is not holding onto grease.

First coat is down, boy that stuff looks nice, even with just one coat... it does need a second coat to clean it up.

Of course, I pulled the transom because I pulled all the OMC "stuff" out!

I also found that I had water intrusion in the transom. from the transom drain.(Luckily no rot though)

I highly suggest that you pull everything and clean it all up (It REALLY cleans up the engine compartment)

My Wife says I am far too much of a perfectionist!!

What kind of out drive did your boat have? What kind of out drive did you end up going to?

Love the bilgekote. I used it without the primer. Mine was previously painted with something. I sprayed and scrubbed with purple power then rinsed. Then I went over it with laquer thinner. Brushed it on and it looks great.

I here you, I got one coat on last night and today it is blinding... one more should level out the areas where you can still see through it...

Man it is going to look nice... have to love the bright white --- looks clean!!!
